WTF: Gundam Wing Cosplay
From Gundam Wing, we've done a Duo costume (which was composed of
bought pieces, the major modification being the addition of white cuffs to
a short-sleeved priest shirt), and the OZ uniforms for Une, Zechs, and Noin.
Further Gundam Wing costumes are in the works (because we all like this series).
When we set out to do these uniforms, we decided to do them as
realistically as possible. So, the uniform jackets are fully lined, sport
metallic braid (as opposed to the silky braid that's easier to come by),
have metal buttons, and are made from polyester so as to look like real
military uniforms. We ended up buying our pants, gloves, and shoes in each
case (see below for details). More about the Zechs wig and helmet can
be found below. We even modified the buckles of the belts
(very visible in the group photo)
.
Unfortunately, at the time, we did not have a sewing machine capable of
doing buttonholes, so we had to design the jackets to have Velcro closures
(however, the machine we have now can do buttonholes all day long).
As we were wearing these costumes to conventions,
we didn't bother with sidearms or holsters, since realistic weapons
aren't allowed there. (Our Zechs sometimes wore his camera case
in that position instead.)
For all the OZ uniforms pictured here, I (Starherd) did the sewing, and
Kasra laboriously attatched the multitude of buttons.

Une's OZ Uniform
For the Une uniform, Kasra chose shoes to emulate some of the art book
pictures. This is appropriate, since for
Anime Expo
, I completed the capes
for all three uniforms, and Une only appears with her cape in the art books.
(The upper picture is the Une uniform as seen at
Fanime 2002
; the lower
picture includes the modifications made for
Anime Expo 2002
.)
The jacket was made from a modified store-bought pattern.
That's Kasra's real hair wound up in Une's buns there - which took a
considerable amount of time and effort on Kasra's part. :-)
The glasses and gloves were purchased at a costume shop.
The shirt beneath the jacket is actually a shirt front that attatches to
the jacket itself, with scarf attatched - we decided that the jackets
were heavy enough without adding a whole shirt beneath. ;-)
For Fanime, the pants were opaque white tights, but by
Anime Expo
,
we managed to procure white stretch cotton leggins. They were a bugger
to find, since they seem to be out of style at the moment. Silly style.
Because of them, we learned the true joy of shopping at Goodwill...
The Une jacket/shirt front/belt combination is valued at about $200,
and the additional cape would be around $25.
Zechs' OZ Uniform
For the Zechs uniform, the shirt was done as a shirt front, as it was for the
Une uniform. Gold buttons (rather than silver) were used at the wearer's
request. I didn't have time to finish the boot covers for Fanime, but as
you can see in the lower (
Anime Expo 2002
) picture, when I completed them
they looked and fit great. :-)
The jacket was made from a modified store-bought pattern.
The wig started life as a $60 showgirl-type wig, which fell to a wavy bottom.
I cut it to the appropriate length (thus losing the curls), and the bangs were
carefully styled in, using a lot of very strong hair gel so that they'd survive
being under the helmet most of the time.
The helmet began as a military surplus helmet liner, and was extensively
modified in shape using wire craft mesh and Crayola Model Magic. Model
Magic dries to a rather soft consistancy, so we put on several layers of
gloss varnish and tissue paper to harden it (now, when you knock on it, it
sounds like plastic). The helmet was then spray painted, and clear plastic
was installed to cover the eyes (in some pictures, this makes the eyes
glare nicely). We intended to further accentuate the various panel-lines
of the helmet using a black paint marker, but we... um... never got around
to it. *Sheepish*
The Zechs jacket/shirt front/belt combination is valued at around $200.
The wig would be around $75 (cut and styled), the additonal cape around $25,
the boot covers around $20, and the helmet (completed) would be around $50.
Noin's OZ Uniform
The Noin jacket pattern was made from scratch (using the Zechs
pattern only for the length of the back and the cuff shape). I think
it came out pretty well, for a first try. (Unfortunately, I'm a good
bit bustier than Noin, and I need to work on adjustments for that.)
I have yet to complete the boot covers for the uniform, but they'll
be just like those for the Zechs uniform.
That's my real hair, with lots of hair gel (though never quite enough
to make the back behave... *sigh*).
The Noin jacket and belt are valued at about $180; the boot covers
(see the Zechs items)
would be $20, and the cape would be $25.
Want an OZ Uniform, a Zechs helmet,
or anything else Gundam (Wing or otherwise)-related?
Just
let us know!
(Please read our
Ordering FAQ
before requesting a comission.)
(Note that due to a new baby, we cannot at present
attempt to construct the Gundams themselves. Keep in mind that the shipping costs
on full Gundam armor would be pretty high, too...)
